Sirens — Studio MacGuire / Bristol Light Festival

Sirens was created by Studio MacGuire — a large-scale water projection installation that began with small-scale tests projecting onto water surfaces. Raven Staging were brought in to develop that concept into a full-scale, bespoke system for touring outdoor waterside venues.

Our brief was to design, fabricate, and install a 9m × 6m submersible projection screen, rigged precisely below the water surface so that imagery projected from above would appear to float within the water itself. Achieving accurate positioning of the screen at the correct depth in outdoor waterways — each with different tidal conditions, water clarity, access constraints, and mooring restrictions — presented a distinct engineering challenge at every venue.

The installation toured three festivals: Floodlights Festival at Princes Quay, Hull; LightWaves Festival at Salford Quays, Manchester; and Bristol Light Festival at Bristol Harbourside — each requiring the system to be adapted to a new environment without compromising the visual result. Bespoke covered projection towers were also designed and provided as part of the installation package.
